First Light, Ability Support
Who we support

The people we
work alongside.

We support adults and young people with disability across Western Australia. What matters more than a diagnosis is what you are trying to do.

Situations, not conditions

Most provider websites open with a list of conditions.

We would rather start with situations, because that is how people recognise themselves.

The rest of this page is a handful of moments people first reach out. If any of them sound like where you are, the rest of a first conversation is easy.

  • 01

You have just received your first NDIS plan and have no idea what to do with it.

  • 02

You want to move out, or you have moved out and it is not going the way you hoped.

  • 03

Your parents are getting older and everyone in the family knows the current arrangement will not hold forever.

  • 04

You are leaving school and the structure that held the week together is about to disappear.

  • 05

Your health has changed and things that were straightforward last year are not any more.

  • 06

You have had support before and found it rushed, inconsistent, or done to you rather than with you.

  • 07

You are managing perfectly well but a few hours a week would take the pressure off everyone.

  • 08

Someone in your family has been doing the caring and it has quietly become unsustainable.

About diagnosis

Situations first, diagnosis second.

We work with people who have intellectual, physical, psychosocial, sensory and neurological disability, and combinations of those. Some people have one diagnosis. Some have several. Some are still working out what to call it, and that does not stop us having a conversation.

What we will not do is claim specialist clinical expertise we have not evidenced. Where your situation calls for a specific clinical skill set, we will say so and help you find someone who has it.

If we are not the right fit, you will hear it early. That is not us turning you away. It is us not spending three months of your funding finding out the hard way.

Families, carers & supporters

Take our cue from the person in front of us.

A good number of our conversations start with a parent, a sibling or a partner rather than the participant. That is completely normal and they are welcome.

Where the person receiving support can lead the conversation, they lead it. Where they would prefer someone else did most of the talking, that is fine too. We take our cue from the person in front of us rather than from assumptions about what they can manage.

If you have been carrying the caring role on your own for a long time, it is worth saying so out loud. Support that takes pressure off a family carer is a legitimate outcome, not a soft one.

If English is not your first language

Interpreting on the first call, not the second.

Bring someone to interpret if you like, or we can arrange interpreting through TIS National at no cost to you. Tell us when you get in touch and we will organise it for the first call rather than the second.

Languages spoken within our team to be listed once confirmed.

If you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

Tell us what would make working with us comfortable.

Tell us what would make working with us comfortable, including if you would prefer to involve a community organisation or a particular person in the conversation. We will work with that rather than around it.

Not sure yet?

Not sure whether we are right for you?

Ask. It costs nothing and you will get a straight answer either way.
